Why is Natural Hair Important? Let's Take a Closer Look
What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear the word hair? Long, short, salon, haircut, styles, curly are all the words that pop to mind when I hear the word hair. Now, this time what is the first word that pops to mind when you hear Natural Hair?
The word that wrestles back and forth in my mind is identity. I mean think about it, our hair tells a story. A story of which parent had the curly hair, and which one did not, a story that longs to be unveiled about where you're from, and so many mysterious questions behind it.
Our hair is also what others see when we are first introduced in a class, meetings, interviews, and even first impressions. Therefore, it is equally important as your eyes, mouth, smile and many other features of yourself.
What is natural Hair?
According to Taliah Waajid Brand's article, "natural hair refers to the natural hair that grows out of the scalp in its curly, kinky, oily state." Simply put it is hair that has not been tampered with and not been dramatically burnt with chemicals.
In today's society, wigs, extensions, and weaves are such a norm. Not saying you shouldn't wear or get them, by all means do as you please. We just got so used to the trend that we look like an entirely new person. It is to the extent where we've abandoned our natural color for a more vibey look that suits the season or holiday we're about to go on. And this all falls back to identity, how? A loss of touch of who you truly are. You are wonderfully and fearfully made, quoted from one of my favorite books. You were made different for a reason, you were set apart for a reason.
The way you dress says a lot about you
The saying is true, in fact most of us reading this, have had at least one bad hair day; just as you did not do your hair that morning, it was also an indicator to others that you weren't feeling well or just not yourself that day. Likewise, just as you dramatically dyed your hair from bright red to different colors of the rainbow, it automatically tells me "who broke your heart girl?"
In Roopashree Sharma's personality test, she mentions how "our hair reveals a lot about our personality traits", so how much more does your hair define the rest of you, aside from your characteristic traits? Much more!
My mother once told me "don't ever cut your hair, it is part of who you are, it's your crown." That stuck with me for a very long time, to the point where, every time I did a dramatic cut, the words of my mother would echo through my head. My mind would start filling with questions "am I making the right decision?", or "am I going to regret this?" My mother embraced my natural black thick hair, it was something I knew she was most proud of.
How can such a feature have an impact on another human being? Simple, it was my real hair, not a wig, not a weave, but my natural hair. It was the hair that I inherited from my mother and my father's genes, it was the work that was woven together in her womb, and the work of art she was most proud of.
Our natural hair is unique and one-of-a-kind, it holds a noble crown on your head that defines your true beauty.
