Ever wondered what your silky pillow or bonnet that you are sleeping on is made out of? While it has all these great benefits for your hair and skin, you are actually sleeping on silkworms and their pupas.

I dare you to look up bombyx mori.

Surprisingly they are high in protein and minerals. So the least you could do is thank them instead of dropping your jaw to how creepy it looks.

Now, that is out of the way, let's take a deeper look at what silk is made out of and its history along with the benefits of silk.

What is silk?

Silk is "fine soft thread produced by the larvae of certain types of moths, feeding on mulberry leaves” according to Etymonline, or in other words silk is made out of caterpillars who are thriving on mulberry leaves.

One study showed that the“wife of the mythological Yellow Emperor, Huangdi” started the process of weaving silk, which is known as ‘sericulture’. This is dated back sometime before the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE.

How is Silk good for your hair?

According to PubMed Central,“silkworm pupa (what silks are made of) has been shown to slow the signs of aging, darken gray hair, and help people lose weight, which can benefit the soap and cosmetics industries.” Silkworms are high in protein, oil, minerals and vitamins, therefore this is a huge benefit already for hair and skin.
